Those crazy Mavericks! John McCain and Sarah Palin are firin’ up their base with racially tinged attacks on Barack Obama and gettin’ good crowds. When McCain asked a Southern crowd “Do we really know who Barack Obama is?” someone yelled “Terrorist!” and McCain smiled. Someone else yelled “Kill him!” and McCain said nothing.
Here’s a post from an eyewitness named NowandZen who attended a rally in Clearwater, Fla. “Arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric’s questions for her “less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media.” At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, ‘Sit down, boy.’ ”
Palin encouraged these remarks by calling Obama “different” and claiming Obama doesn’t have the same “values” as the morally superior Palin and McCain do. She claimed Obama and Bill Ayers are very close but couldn’t say exactly how. She forgot to mention giving the welcoming speech at the Alaskan Independence Party rally or her husband’s membership in this group that wants Alaska to secede from the U.S. The McCain campaign recently admitted if they focus on the economy, they will lose. So how about a big cheer for changing the subject and bringing racism back into the race!
From The Washington Post and AmericaBlog on Palin’s rally:
“Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers,” Palin said.
“Boooo!” said the crowd.
“And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, ‘launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'” she continued.
“Boooo!” the crowd repeated.
“Kill him!” proposed one man in the audience.
Palin keeps quiet.
